Loews Will Build 20-Screen, 4000-seat Flagship Movie Complex
Several Top Restaurants to Form Dining Destination
GLENDALE, AZ — With the opening of the new Glendale Arena just four (4) days away, the Westgate City Center mixed-use development has announced its first series of tenants in Phase I of its Entertainment Village, the project's central core, scheduled to open in 2005. Westgate has secured the commitments of a star-studded lineup, including a world-class movie multiplex and some of the Valley's leading restaurants.
"This is the first, dramatic step toward establishing Westgate as one of the Valley's premier retail, dining and entertainment destinations, " stated Steve Ellman, Chairman and CEO of the Phoenix Coyotes NHL franchise and its affiliate, Coyote Center Development, Westgate's masterplan developer. Ellman adds, "Our tenant commitments kick-start the development of Westgate, with some of the best brand names in leisure and hospitality."
The group of tenants announced today for the first phase of over 450,000 square feet of retail, restaurants and entertainment include:
- Loews Cineplex Entertainment will develop a 20-screen, 80,000 square foot multiplex cinema, with 4000 stadium-style seats. Features will include: premium and reserved seating, enhanced customer service programs, and an upscale café for movie-going patrons.
Loews Cineplex operates or has partnerships in 312 theatres and 3,025 screens under the Loews, Cineplex Odeon, Star, Magic Johnson, Cinemex, Yelmo Cineplex, Megabox Cineplex and UFA names. The company's partnerships include: Magic Johnson Theatres, Yelmo Cineplex of Spain and Megabox Cineplex of Korea, and now Neue Filmpalast of Germany. Loews Cineplex is privately owned by Onex Corporation, one of Canada's largest companies with global operations in service, manufacturing and technology industries, and Oaktree Capital Management, LLC, a Los Angeles based private investment management firm specializing in inefficient markets and alternative investments with approximately US$25 billion of assets committed for management primarily from institutional investors
- Mastro's Steakhouse, a fine dining concept of the Mastro Restaurant Group, will develop an 8,000 square foot restaurant, similar to their Scottsdale and Beverly Hills fine steak and seafood restaurants.
- Maloney's/Cocomo Joe's, a dining and entertainment concept of the Mastro Restaurant Group, will develop an approximately 20,000 square foot themed facility, which will include a restaurant and bar, games and entertainment, and a rock-and-roll themed bowling center.
- Fox Restaurant Group, the hugely popular purveyor of Bloom and North in Scottsdale, with other fine restaurants in Tucson and suburban Denver. Fox will develop two restaurants at Westgate, Bloom, and also a new concept under design.
- Martini Ranch, a dynamic food-and-beverage concept, with units in Scottsdale, San Diego, and Encinitas.
- Thaifoon, an award-winning modern Asian restaurant, which began in Scottsdale, and has grown to California and Utah.
Travis Reid, the President and CEO of Loews Cineplex Entertainment, related their excitement about joining the Westgate lineup. "Loews is proud to become a part of making this destination one of the most entertaining in the United States. We take great pride in delivering the most compelling movie-going experience in North America today, and are pleased to share, with Westgate, a similar vision of excitement and customer service."
Adds Mike Mastro, President of the Mastro Restaurant Group, "The arena opening and the Phase One Entertainment district is about to create the Scottsdale of the West Valley in terms of dining and entertainment. We strongly believe in this market and Steve Ellman's vision for Westgate, and are thrilled to be one of the leaders."
"The City of Glendale is excited and pleased to welcome these first tenants of Westgate," said Mayor Elaine Scruggs. "By their investments in our city, they have recognized this area will be one of the major destination attractions in all of Maricopa County."
Westgate officials indicated today that they now expect the project to begin construction in Spring, with the cinema, restaurants, and first phase of mixed-use opening in the Fall of 2005. The first submittals for the City of Glendale design review process are planned within sixty (60) days.
The Westgate City Center, upon completion, will include more than 6.5 million square feet of retail, entertainment, restaurants, office, residential, and hotels, making it one of the largest commercial real estate developments in North America.
